Trustee Ellen Chambers was elected as a trustee for Lakehead District School Board in October 2014. Trustee Chambers was elected as chair of the Board on December 4, 2018. She is a member of the following committees: Coordinating Committee, Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPBSA) Board of Directors, and is the voting delegate, and Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Liaison Committee. She is the alternate member of Suspension Appeal Hearing/Expulsion Hearing Committee, Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC) and Equity and Inclusive Education Committee.

Ellen has a broad perspective of education in Ontario having been local president for the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario for seven years and sat on the ETFO Provincial Executive. Ellen sits on several local social justice committees.

Trustee George Saarinen was elected as a trustee for Lakehead District School Board in November 2006. He was vice chair of the Board from December 2014 to November 2017. Trustee Saarinen was re-elected vice chair on December 4, 2018. Trustee Saarinen is a member of the following committees: Coordinating Committee, Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Director Liaison Committee, Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), Principal Selection Process Committee, Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay Committee (STSTB), Equity and Inclusive Education Committee and Suspension Appeal Hearing/Expulsion Hearing Committee.

A strong proponent for volunteering, Trustee Saarinen believes it is important to give back to your community. He has had numerous volunteering experiences: past chair of the McKellar Park School Council, past chair of the Council of School Council Chairs, past PTA president, Boy Scout leader and T Ball coach to name a few. He was also recognized as a Citizen of Exceptional Achievement in May 2003 by City Council for his contributions to the Ringette Association.

Believing every student at Lakehead Public Schools deserves the best education possible, Trustee Saarinen sees the top issue facing the Board is the Ministry Funding Formula. Trustee Saarinen believes ongoing dialogue and open communication with all stakeholders and the community is essential. Supporting student success by continuing to develop partnerships with business, industry and the community is also a priority for him.

George has two grown daughters, Seija and Kaija. In addition to volunteering, his interests include cross country sking, fishing and traveling.

Marg ArnoneMarg Arnone

Trustee Marg Arnone was first elected as a trustee for Lakehead District School Board in October 2010 and was vice chair of the Board from December 2017 to November 2018. Trustee Arnone is a member of the following committees: Audit Committee, Supervised Alternative Learning Committee (SAL), Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Liaison Committee, OPSBA Awards Selection Committee, the Success Advisory Committee and Suspension Appeals Hearing/Expulsion Hearing Committee. She is the alternate member for Lakehead Public Schools International (2017) and Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC).

Marg is a registered practical nurse and a seasoned volunteer in the community. She is a member of the United Way Board of Directors and a member of the Congress of Union Retirees, Canadian Auto Workers Retirees Advisory Executive for Canada.

With three grandchildren in school, Marg feels very strongly about the important role education plays in preparing students to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Trustee Sue Doughty-Smith was elected as a trustee to the Lakehead District School Board on October 22, 2018. Trustee Doughty-Smith is a member of the following committees: Coordinating Committee, Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) and Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Director Liaison Committee. She is an alternate member of Supervised Alternative Learning Committee (SAL) and Success Advisory Committee (SAC).

Trustee Doughty-Smith has 40 years’ experience with Lakehead Public Schools as a Student Support Professional (SSP). With her election as a trustee in the 2018 Municipal Election, Trustee Doughty-Smith will continue her mission to support Lakehead Public Schools students and public education as a whole. “I have dedicated my professional life promoting and protecting public education,” says Trustee Doughty-Smith. “I am extremely pleased to be able to continue to use my knowledge and skills and relationships to make the best possible decisions for our students. In addition to her experience as a Student Support Professional (SSP), Trustee Doughty-Smith gained valuable experience on the local and provincial levels of the Ontario Secondary Schools Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO). She recently was a member of the OSSTF/FEESO Provincial Executive until her retirement in 2017. Trustee Doughty-Smith is married to her husband Gerard and has two sons and four grandchildren.

Deborah MassaroDeborah Massaro

Deborah Massaro was first elected to the Lakehead District School Board in December 2000 and was chair of the Board from December 2007 to November 2014 and December 2015 to November 2018. Trustee Massaro is a member of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Director Liaison Committee. She is the alternate member on the Suspension Appeals Hearing/Expulsion Hearing Committee and the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC).

“Lakehead Public Schools will continue to provide a safe learning environment, complete with programs that benefit all students, regardless of their interests and capabilities,” says Massaro. “A good education system keeps students interested, which will help them achieve, and strive to be successful in the future.”

Trustee Oikonen is a trustee member on Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Director Liaison Committee and Audit Committee. He is the alternate member for Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay Committee (STSTB) and Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC).

Hobbies: curling, going to his summer camp, golfing, gardening and enjoying time with his grandchildren.

Trustee Ryan Sitch was elected as a trustee to the Lakehead District School Board on October 22, 2018. Trustee Sitch is a member of the following committees: Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC), Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Awards Selection Committee, Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Director Liaison Committee and School Calendar Committee. He is an alternate member for Suspension Appeal Hearing/Expulsion Hearing Committee.

As a graduate of the Computer Science program at Lakehead University, he has worked 21 years as a professional in the Information Technology Management field. “In addition to providing the very best education possible, we must also provide the supports for each student to excel,” says Trustee Ryan Sitch. Trustee Sitch has been a board member for the True North Food Cooperative for four years and has an avid interest in social issues.

Jaimi PlaterJaimi Plater – Student Trustee

At the Tuesday, May 22 Standing Committee Meeting of the Lakehead District School Board, Hammarskjold High School Grade 11 student Jaimi Plater was introduced as the new Student Trustee. Jaimi replaces outgoing Student Trustee Lahama Naeem who will be graduating from Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute and attending university this September. Jaimi Plater will commence her duties as the Student Trustee on August 1, 2018.

“I am very proud to become the Student Trustee for the 2018-2019 school year,” says Jaimi Plater, incoming Lakehead District School Board Student Trustee. “I am very passionate about public education and I have been very fortunate to have a number of experiences with some exciting Ministry of Education and other education related initiatives.”

Jaimi has gained valuable experiences with school, community and provincial activities including:

  • Minister’s Student Advisory Council Member
  • Ontario Education Research Symposium Participant
  • All-Staff Ministry Meeting Panel Participant
  • International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement Conference Participant
  • Model Parliament 2017 participant
  • Thunder Bay–Rainy River Constituency Youth Council Member

Following secondary school, Jaimi is interested in attending University to earn a major in Political Science with a minor in French. She also aspires to attend law school to become a corporate lawyer.

The student trustee provides representation for all Lakehead Public Schools students in accordance with Ontario Legislation. The student trustee is a non-voting member and has a one year term for students in Grade 11 or 12. Students may apply for a second term.
